President Obama Nominates Candidate for FCC Chairman
Today, President Obama nominated Julius Genachowski to be the next Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC is the federal agency with jurisdiction over many telecommunications and technology policy issues.
Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts praised the nomination, "Julius Genachowski is an excellent choice to chair the FCC. He will bring a combination of private and public sector experience to the agency. His tech experience and knowledge will be invaluable in facilitating the continued rollout and enhancement of broadband in America. We applaud President Obama's nomination and we look forward to working with the Commission under Julius' leadership."
Applause for Genachowski was widespread, including from public interest groups like Free Press and Public Knowledge regulators and industry groups. The always informative blog on tech policy, National Journal's TechDaily Dose has a round-up of comments.
The nomination must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and hearings will be held on it by the Senate Commerce Committee.
