Comcast Remote: Love it? Hate it?

comcastremotes.jpgGo ahead, be honest. What do you think of that Comcast remote control? I want to know what you think every time you pick it up to change a channel, adjust the volume while in the dark, or simply navigate around the TV user interface. Are there too many buttons? Does the "Last" key make sense? Did you ever press that "Help" key and wonder why nothing happens?

So, please leave me a comment and tell me what you like and what you hate. Also, don't hesitate to tell me about something that you'd really like to have to help you navigate through the 10's of thousands of viewing choices we bring you each month.

@Molly, thanks for visiting Comcast Voices.

The gray up and down buttons (Page Up and Page Down) on the right and left hand sides of the Comcast remote control are used in the guide listings screens to skip an entire page of listings at one time (4 channels at a time).

The same Page Up and Page Down buttons when in DVR playback will skip ahead or back in 5 minute increments. Page Up = 5 minutes ahead, Page Down = 5 minutes back. Each subsequent key press wilkl move in 5 minute increments. In most all areas this feature will also work for On Demand programs.

The white up and down arrow buttons near the center OK-Select button will move the “cursor” up and down one listing at a time when in the guide listings screens . The white channel plus and channel minus buttons on the remote control will move the currently displayed channel to the adjacent channel.

A, B and C buttons:

The A button is currently used to bring up a Locks overlay as a shortcut to quickly set a lock on a channel, a program name or by TV or MPAA rating.

To skip ahead by day in the guide listings, use the Day + button (it's the red C button above the 4 directional arrows in the center of the remote control). To go back a day in the guide listings grid, use the Day - button (this is the blue B button to the left of the Day + button).

B. What do the A, B, and C buttons do?

I have a broken remote and was trying to replace it with one that I friend gave me (he had extras). I can control the TV but not the cable box. How do I know if the remote can pair with the box I have? I have a dark silver Comcast remote that I'm trying to use with a Motorola HDTV box. I can control the TV so I know the remote works. Thanks!

Hello Jim and thanks for your comments and questions. We do have a website up now that talks about our new remote control, including an image and some screen shots of our newest on-screen guides.

http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/cable-tv/xr2-xfinity-tv-remote/

This remote can use either RF or IR, depending on the cable box that it is used with. It will initially be used with our newest cable boxes and HD-DTAs (coming soon) and should start deploying to customers over the next 60 days.

The remote will in most cases be paired with the cable box.

Don't have any major complaints about the remote. Would like to hear more about the new remote. Will it have more than cable box, tv, ane aux? Being that it uses rf will be using rolling codes to the specific cable box so I wont be changing the channels on all the tv in my house? Ill assume it will still use ir for older tv's dvd audio etc. Will it be a learning remote. Hopfully its not computer dependent where you actually have to connect it to a computer in order to program it. Be great to see some pic of it. Would be great to see a blog on the new upcomming remote. Thanks

Hello Rick and thanks for your feedback. Apologies for the issue that you are having.

Can you let me know what type of cable box you have? The model number is usually listed on the front panel of the DVR. Also, do you have this DVR connected to your TV via component or HDMI cables? Do you turn the cable box on and the TV on at the same time or do you leave the cable box on all the time?

The DVR may have a HDMI handshake issue when communicating with the TV set (if you have the TV set connected with HDMI cables). You may want to try leaving your cable box on and turn the TV on and off and see if that solves the issue. Or if connect the TV to the DVR with component cables and see if the issue occurs then.

One easy thing to try would be to unplug your cable box from the AC power outlet and then plug it back in again. That may straighten things out.

Sometimes there can also be interference with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) in the room. Some newer LCD TV sets can interfere with the remote control frequencies when they warm up. You may need to adjust the TV set's backlighting setting, check your TV’s manual for how to do that.

If you are still having a problem, you can exchange your Comcast remote control at any of our area service centers at no charge or call us at 1-800-COMCAST and we can arrange to get a replacement remote control out to you.

Hello Mr. Blankman and thanks for your comments. Our next remote control (due to be and available to customers starting over the summer) is an RF remote control that I think our customers will be pleased with.

On your current situation, I would like to suggest a few things before having you exchange the remote control.

First, try changing the batteries in the remote control. Another thing to try would be to unplug your cable box from the AC power outlet and then plug it back in again. That may straighten things out.

The remotes should all be radio frequency remotes not infrared remotes. The remote for one of my boxes doesn't have a range more than 3 ft and when i press fast forward occasionally it will go 15 seconds back or when i do channel up it will bring up my recordings.

Hello Mr. Chesney and thanks for your question. We have a software update for the guide scheduled to start over the summer that will allow a customer to turn on or off closed captioning via a guide menu option which is far easier than the current option of having to go through the user settings of the set top box.

There will be a closed caption menu under the Setup options. Thanks for your patience.

Hello Ms. Huber. Sorry to hear of the issues you are having with the Comcast remote control (with the Red OK-Select button) and your Sylvania TV set.

http://customer.comcast.com/Pages/HelpNFC.aspx?print=false&id=remotes

According to the above link, the most likely code is 11314
Others to try: 10054, 10187, 10171, 11963, 11271, 10030, 10587

To program your Comcast remote:

1.Turn on the TV or other device that you would like to program.
2.Press the TV button on your remote control.
NOTE: If you would like to program your remote control to work with a DVD Player, VCR or Audio device press the AUX button.
3.Press and hold Setup until the red light blinks twice, then release Setup.
4.Enter the first code for your device listed above. If you perform this procedure correctly, the red light will blink twice.
NOTE: If you enter an invalid code, the red light will display one long blink and exit the programming mode. Repeat steps 2 to 4 with a valid code.
5.Aim the remote control at your device and press Power once (press the Play key for devices that don’t have a POWER button). If the TV turns off, make sure that the VOL+/- and Mute buttons also work. If so, you’re all set!
6.If not, repeat these steps using the next manufacturer’s code (you may need to try several codes to find the one that works).

Hello Mr. Sheperd and thanks for stopping by Comcast Voices.

Sorry to hear you are having a problem with your Comcast remote control. I would like to suggest a few things before having you exchange the remote control.

Sometimes there can also be interference with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) in the room.

Another thing to check is the channel entry method. Press the Menu button twice on the silver Comcast remote control. then select Setup, Guide Setup, the Channel Entry Method should be defaulted to Auto Tune, so if it's not, go ahead and change that.

If you are still having a problem, you can exchange your Comcast remote control at any of our area service centers at no charge or call us at 1-800-COMCAST and we can arrange to get a replacement remote control out to you.

Haven't had it a week and already having issues... it was working fine then when I try to input an HD channel or anything other than the local one digit channels it only takes the first number input and jumps to that channel... for instance, if I am trying to input 1003 it will see the 1 and then jump to the on demand channel... if try to input 405 it only sees the 4 and goes to that channel??? What's up with that???

I cannot get a code that works for my sylvania LC370SSR LCD TV. This is a popular model being sold at Target. The remote it comes with is the NF000UD. Why is this TV not compatible with the latest comcast xfinity remote (with red button)? This is a brand new box and this tv was sold in 2008... does it have to do with RF to IR compatibility?

Thanks for any info. I have been working on this for months with my last box and thought it would be fixed with this brand new xfinity box.

Hello Mike and thanks for your question. This guide does show you all of the available channels that are in the channel lineup, not just the ones that you are subscribed to. You are able to set up a list of Favorite Channels and use that as your on-screen guide. In fact, you can set up multiple favorite lists for different people in your household or you can set up Favorites lists by genre (Movies, Sports, etc).

It sounds as if you have already set up your Favorites List. After the Favorites List is created, you can access it and cycle through it by pressing the FAV button on the Comcast remote control (the FAV button is to the left of the channel up/down button). While in the guide grid, you can push the FAV button to access your favorite channels. You will see the name of your Favorites list to the left of the red TV Guide logo near the top center of the screen

Cycling and browsing through your favorites guide grid works just like the normal guide grid. The link below should help you set up your favorites, check out page 9 for the steps to set up and access your favorites lists.

http://por-chr.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/Onscreen.pdf

You are not currently able to have your Favorites list as your default guide grid.

My remote had been working fine until today. All of a sudden, the DVR is failing to respond to remote commands on more or less every other press of a button, even though the remote light is lighting up every time. I changed the batteries, and am getting the same result. Also, holding down a button (e.g., page down) used to repeat while held down, now I'm lucky if it produces a single response, making programming a real hassle.

I selected all my favorites on the remote. Is there a way to scroll these channels only? I can do it by hitting the favorite button then the page up or down but if I select a channel then try to scroll again it goes back to all channels. Hitting the favorite button and page up or down starts the scroll at the first channel again. I would like to only scroll favorite channels all the time.

Hello GD and thanks for your question.

I have a suggestion for controlling two HD cable boxes in the same vicinity....Certain series of our cable boxes use a different remote control protocol (XMP) and a slightly different colored remote control than our traditional HD cable boxes. This is so you could differentiate between the two remotes easily and not have the channels or menus change inadvertently.

You would need to swap one of your HD cable boxes out so that at least one of them (and the remote) would use the XMP protocol.

If you live in an area that uses Motorola branded cable boxes, the DCX 3200, DCX 3400, RNG 150 and Pace RNG 110 models all use the XMP remote protocol. All other box types use the traditional IR protocol.

If you live in an area that uses Scientific-Atlanta or Cisco branded cable boxes, the RNG 150 and RNG 200 use the XMP remote protocol. You should be able to get one of these cable boxes shipped to you or swapped out at a local Comcast office. Give us a call at 1-800-COMCAST to start that process or get more information.

Hello Joel and thanks for your question.

Many of our Motorola-branded cable boxes and all DTA (Digital Transport Adapters) have a jack on the back of the box for an IR extender. The jack is labeled IR. You can plug an IR Extender or IR Receiver into that jack and then put your cable box in a closet or cabinet (allowing for proper ventilation of course).

An IR Extender or IR Receiver is included with Digital Adapter equipment. To use it, connect the IR Extender to the IR In input on the back of the cable box or Digital Adapter. Put the other end of the IR Extender somewhere that allows a direct line of sight between it and the remote.

Note: With some cable boxes, connecting the IR Extender disables the RF input on the front of the cable box. To avoid this, disconnect the IR Extender from the cable box when you’re not using it.

Newer cable boxes being deployed this year use RF (not IR) for the remote control so the box can easily be out of sight at all times (within reason

I have been extremely pleased both with the Motorola HD DVR, and the remote provided by Comcast. The last 2 months however have been an exercise in frustration. We have two DVRs and remotes to go with them. The remote in the family room has started to malfunction quite a bit recently. The keys that we use the most, Last, and the four arrow keys around and including the OK button, the volume and channel rockers, have all begun requiring more and more pressure to make them work and some won't work at all. These are intermittent, but I've noticed that this has not gotten better and has only gotten worse. Do these remotes wear out? Is there a policy/procedure for trying to get a replacement remote? Thank you all for your comments. I have enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on the remotes. Thank you.

Hello stockholm28 and thanks for your feedback. I am sorry to hear of the problem that you described.

I have two suggestions for you. One would be to unplug the cable box from the power supply, wait 15 seconds then plug it back in.

Another suggestion would be to disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV and the cable box and then reconnect it. The described issue could be an HDMI handshake issue where the cable box and the TV are having issues communicating.

If either of those suggestions do not resolve the problem, please give us a call at 1-800-COMCAST so that we can have an experienced technician begin additional troubleshooting.

I have a question the remote control and the on-screen tv guide.

Recently, I replaced my analog tv with an HD tv and connected using an HDMI cable. Now, when I push the guide button and then use the page up or page down, often the tv guide will just start scrolling by incredibly fast. I am not holding the page button down. Sometimes after pressing it once this will happen. Is there some setting that can be changed to stop this?

Hello Mr. Moore and thanks for your feedback.

In addition to the dedicated FF and REW buttons near the top of the Comcast silver remote control, you can also use the left and right arrow buttons near the center of the remote control to FF or REW in DVR or On Demand programs.

There are 5 minute skip-ahead and skip-back features to get around during DVR playback.

The Page Up buton on the remote control moves you ahead 5 minutes at a time while Page Down moves you back 5 minutes. Multiple presses of these buttons will move ahead or back in multiples of five minutes. That is a great shortcut to get around in a DVR program.

In most all areas the Page Up and Page Down buttons also work the same way in On Demand.

Hello Chris Gaskins and thanks for your feedback. We do have plans to improve the closed caption access point in our guides in 2012. This improvement should make it a little easier to turn the feature on or off as needed.

Picture-in-Picture (PIP) functionality was a feature that was available with the previous guide on our Scientific Atlanta (SA) and Cisco branded DVRs. I completely understand that this was a valuable core feature for you and some of our DVR customers. I was disappointed that we were not able to retain PIP in this guide. Unfortunately, this unique feature could not be supported by the new guide given the goals and timing of this and future releases. Some televisions have a PIP feature built in. The new guide does not impact your television set's PIP functionality (if it has one). This link may help:
http://www.comcast.com/MediaLibrary/1/2/CM/VanityURL/documents/pip_tv.pdf

You would need to also use the TV remote control to use and control the PIP display.
PIP was only available in our SA/Cisco DVRs. The PIP feature impacted a small percentage of our SA customers and an even smaller percentage of our overall customers; most of which have never had the PIP feature through their cable box.

We did not make the decision to not retain the PIP feature lightly. The ability to keep this feature and incorporate it into phase one of the new guide would have significantly delayed this project and subsequent downstream projects even more - like the new On Screen Guide 2.0 http://www.xfinity.com/onscreenguide2 that we have available now in selected areas of Florida and being more widely deployed in many Cisco areas in 2012.
We also conducted extensive research around the importance of the PIP feature in the current guide and as a potential future feature in upcoming guides. PIP is not currently on our feature roadmap.

In our on-going customer research, PIP continues to drop in ranking of importance of features that the majority of our current customers (and potential customers) use or want. PIP was only ever available with DVRs in our SA areas (a very small percentage).

I certainly understand that there is a passionate customer base for PIP. We also realize that there are some customers who are not happy about this decision. We do mention the loss of PIP at our website for the new guide available here: http://xfinity.comcast.net/meetyourguide/

A new feature that is available with the new guide is the Pause, Swap, Pause functionality, which allows a customer to pause a current program that they are watching (i.e. football game on one channel), swap tuners (using the Swap button at the bottom of the Comcast silver remote control) to another channel and watch the programming on that channel for five minutes, pause that channel and then swap back to the original channel (football game), which is still paused. It’s not meant to be a replacement for PIP, but a low tech full-screen alternative that may suffice in some cases.

I wish there was an easy way to toggle Closed-Captioning. That is one of my many complaints that switching their software has caused me. The only way I know to do it is:
Press Settings
Press Settings
Select "Setup" (should already be highlighted if that is the last thing you accessed on this menu)
Page Down (or move to Subtitle Setup)
Press Select
Press Left for Off, Right for On
Then press Exit.

So, thanks to Comcast, it now requires a minimum of 7 button hits to simply toggle CC. I like to use CC on non-live programming. This and the fact that PIP, which worked perfectly before their software update, doesn't work and noone at Comcast wants to acknowledge that they have taken a working feature away.

note: This is based on my Scientific Atlanta S8300HDC box.

Hello Joanne and thanks for your question.

Page 12 on the link below may help you with instructions on how to delete a favorite channel from your list.

http://por-chr.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/onscreen.pdf

1. Using the Comcast silver remote control, press the Menu button twice, then select Setup; then select Favorite Lists Setup

2. Select the named favorites list that you want to modify (there may be more than one that you set up previously). Press OK-Select at the center of the remote control.

3. Arrow over to the heart icon at the bottom of this screen, then press Ok/Select. A list of your channels should appear. Those channels currently on your Favorites List should have a heart icon displayed to the right.

4. The OK/Select button will toggle the heart icon either On or Off. Heart displayed means the channel is listed as a Favorite No heart displayed means that the channel is not set as a Favorite.

5. Make your changes and then navigate down to the check mark box at the bottom of the screen, press OK-Select again and you should be all set.

Hello Ms. Vogt. I am sorry to hear of the trouble you are having with closed captioning, I realize that this can be frustrating and apologize for the issue.

The on-screen guide that you have has a subtitle menu screen that will allow customers to enable subtitles (closed captioning) through the set top box. You should be able to turn subtitles on or off in the guide menu if you have a newer Scientific Atlanta or Cisco branded HD cable box AND that cable box is connected to your TV set via HDMI or component video cables.

Access the Main Menu by hitting the Menu button twice on your silver Comcast remote control. Select Setup, Then select Subtitle setup. The Subtitle setup screen may be on page 1 or 2 of the Setup menu. (You may have to push the page down button to get to page 2 of this menu).

The default setting is Off. You can use the right arrow on the remote control to turn subtitles On. This method works on most all of our HD cable boxes connected via HDMI or component video cables (the exceptions are the 2000 HD and the 3100 HD cable boxes).

If the steps outlined above do not work or your cable box is connected via other methods, you may need to access and adjust your captioning options via the User Settings. Here are the steps.

Turn OFF your set-top box; it will remain in standby mode. Leave your TV set ON.

1. Press GUIDE on your Comcast silver remote control while the set-top box is in standby mode. OR press the Channel Up and the Channel Down buttons simultaneously on the front panel of the set-top box.

2. From here you can arrow down and can turn captioning ON or OFF and also set up your various closed captioning settings.

I hope the above is helpful.

I have had several frustrating, lengthy calls w/Comcast about the

Hello Ms. Stollsteimer and thanks for your question. We do have plans to improve the closed caption access point in our guide starting later this year. This improvement should make it a little easier to turn the feature on or off on with the Motorola branded cable boxes.

Hello Mr. Montgomery and thanks for your question.

Currently there is no way to set your Favorite List as the default channel lineup. Once you set up your Favorites, you can select the FAV button on the silver Comcast remote control to bring up your Favorite channels in a grid view. The FAV button is to the left of the channel up-down button.

The link below should help you set up your favorites, check out page 12 for the steps to set up and access your favorites lists.

http://por-chr.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/Onscreen.pdf

To Add or Delete Favorite Lists — From the Main Menu choose Favorite Lists Setup and NEW to create a new list and X to delete. To Add or Remove Favorite List Channels — From Favorite Lists Setup, highlight a Favorite List and press OK/Select. Select the heart icon to add channels or the heart icon again to remove channels.

Hello Tony Svolos and thanks for your comments. All of our impacted customers were mailed information in the mail about the new guide ahead of time. Apologies that you did not receive this. We do have some materials online and also on Demand that may assist.

http://xfinity.comcast.net/meetyourguide/ is a good place to start.

http://por-chr.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/Onscreen.pdf is a guide overview that you can print out

http://por-chr.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/S25_DVR_0111.pdf is a DVR User Guide

There is also some video overview available On Demand. Go to On Demand (channel 1) then select Help & Services, then TV, On Screen Guide. There should be a few short videos to choose from about the new guide features .

The on-screen guide is best used with the silver Comcast remote control. If you need one, please stop by one of our service locations or call us at 1-800-COMCAST.

If you send me your mailing address via e-mail I can also send you a hard copy of the materials in the mail, send me an e-mail here: http://blog.comcast.com/contact_author.html?mailTo=Ted%20Hodgins

We certainly know we still have more work to do. This initial new guide is just one step of a multi-step process of improvements, enhancements and new features for our customers in our SA areas. You should expect to see additional improvements this year. The path for future features and quick innovation is through this new guide - features that a majority of our customers have been asking for and features that are already available in the majority of Comcast areas.

The main reason why we are implementing this on-screen guide change is to be able to deliver additional features and services to all of our customers a lot quicker. Some examples of these future features include Caller ID to the TV, myDVR Manager (scheduling your DVR via your phone or from the internet) and AnyRoom DVR.

Our SA/Cisco customers should see some phased improvements and enhancements over the summer and into the fall.

Hello Juan C. Many of our cable boxes have an input source on the back of the cable box that is labeled IR that can be used to hook up an IR extender (infrared). This allows you to have your cable box hidden in a cabinet while still using the Comcast remote to control your set top box via the IR remote input cable.

While I will agree that Comcast is missing relevant codes for programming televisions, this problem is easily solved by looking on the internet. For those who don't find it "intuitive" I say, huh? You're not born expecting your remote buttons to be in certain spots, you are able to learn and adapt. Also, I have tiny hands, but I've never had to use two hands because the channel numbers are at the bottom end of the remote. I have no problem with my Comcast remote, it does what I want it to do.

Over the last couple of days, my remote has gotten SUPER SLOOOOOWWWW. I cannot enter a 30-digit channel as it will only respond to one or two numbers. Changing channels or looking through the guide has given me carpal tunnel syndrome from pressing so hard. HELP!! How can I fix this? I have a Moto digital cable box from Comcast. Oh, and there are brand new batteries in the remote, so it isn't that.

I like the look and shape of the remote, but that's about it.

The volume keys, at least for the two I have, have to be pushed real firmly in order to respond. Plus, I can't hold down the volume buttons to go louder or quieter, but instead I have to keep pressing it each notch to go up or down.

And on DVR, there is a delay when I press the play button after FFWDing thru the commercials.

So, I guess my major problem is that the buttons don't respond well and have to be pressed pretty hard in order to work. It would be nice if each Comcast subscriber got the offer to receive a new free remote each year, because they are fine as-is, but seem to wear out shortly.

I have kind of a weird problem with my remote. It doesn't happen all the time, but it's very frustrating when it does. Sometimes, when I try to turn on the TV, and I press the "TV" button, the remote won't respond. It'll be like this for a few seconds, then the "Cable" button will flash, over and over, for another few seconds. Then the remote will work as intended. Sometimes this effect lasts for a couple minutes, sometimes only for a few seconds. Like I said, it's more annoying than anything else, but I don't know why it's doing this!

My mother is 87 years old and she can't see or handle the remote. She is totally frustrated and wants to cancel Comcast because she can't change channels without doing something that makes the TV go out. She needs a simple, large button remote with channel numbers, volume up and down, and maybe power and mute. There are far too many buttons on the Comcast remote that do too many things she doesn't want to do.

Over the last few days we have noticed that our Comcast remote has gotten very sluggish. We have an HD box and when we try to type in a 3 digital channel it just goes to the first number or the first and third. For instance if we type in 701 for TCM, it goes to channel 7 or channel 71, skipping the 0. We changed the batteries, but no change. It is also very sluggish when trying to scroll channels. It should also be noted that we have tried 2 other universal remotes. One acts the same way as the Comcast remote and the other works a little better but is still very sluggish and often acts like the other remotes. Could there be something wrong with the receiver in the cable box?

John,

Indeed, Comcast does not currently offer an radio frequency (RF) controlled remote. The settop boxes that we have deployed to the field rely upon infra-red (IR) control signals, just as most retail TVs. Since the Comcast remote provides control of both the settop box and the TV, IR control is necessary. As you note, this requires line-of-site between your remote control and the reader which is located on the front of the settop box. Our customers homes may have unique décor, or entertainment system enclosures, that can make line-of-site control difficult. In these cases, many consumers use an infra-red repeater which extends the IR receiver capability a longer distance. I have one of these set ups in my house -- my TV is mounted on a wall, and the cable box is actually in a cabinet in the next room. In this set up, the IR is received via a small button sized reader discretely placed at the bottom of the TV frame. There are a number of providers of IR repeaters / extenders available online.

Cheers,
Gerard Kunkel

Does anyone else have this problem? We got a new DCX3400 recently, and the remote is a real pain. There is a delay in it when using fast forward, stop, pause etc. It is slow enough that as you are fast forwarding through commercials on the DVR, and press "stop" when you get to the program, it takes two or three seconds before it reacts.

Very annoying!

Is there any reason both of my HD receiver boxes, ON A WEEKLY BASIS, drop my favorite channels list? Sometimes it just adds and subtracts various channels to MY FAVORITES (when it does this I don't notice until I'm looking for a channel that has magically disappeared), and sometimes it drops the whole favorite list. Either way, ON A WEEKLY BASIS, i have to take about 20 minutes that I really don't have and re-build the favorite lists. I can't wait until I can get Verizon Fios!

I have two of these remotes one for a regular SA cable box and one for a DVR. They are both annoying because if you don't hold the remote absolutely still, it doesn't turn everything on. With the DVR set it is really bad because in addition to the DVR and the Toshiba TV, I also have Panasonic Surround sound. My wife is forever telling me that the TV doesn't work. I tell her to leave the remote on the table and just push the All On button. Even doing that I get calls of "the TV doesn't work". Now this isn't anything about your "10's of thousands of viewing choices" -- its just about ON and OFF. Your remotes suck!

Just yesterday I took the whole box and the remote to my local service center and got a replacement. Why? Because every time I try to look at anything on OnDemand, it's an exercise in frustration. The remote MIGHT work. I push buttons to scroll through the listings, and it doesn't register, even if I hold it three inches from the box. I paused a show one time and couldn't get anything to respond to start it again--I had to shut everything off and restart and then pick up from where I left off.

So how is it now that I've gone and replaced the box and the remote? NO DIFFERENT. What the hell am I paying for if I can't even use the features on the box? I thought it was the box, but now I think the whole setup is a piece of non-functional crap. Just like the service I got it from. Thanks a lot, Comcrap. It sure is Comcraptic!

FIOS looks better and better all the time, guys. So does streaming Netflix.

The Comcast remote is a cheap, overly complex, poorly designed device.

First problem is that if I spend $2400.00 on a TV why do I have to use Comcast's nasty remote? it would be great to be able to use my TV remote to operate the Comcast cable box.
Second, The complexity and buttonitis problems... I understand the economics of utilizing as few remote control device as possible but I hate the Comcast remote's unecessary amount of buttons for my needs. There is nothing intuitive about using this remote.
And finally..... I have followed the programming instructions exactly as written and this remoote will NOT program ANY codes for ANY TV's. "Two flashes" after a four digit input? HAHAHAHAHAHA!
One more thing Comcast... I'm seriously considering DISH because you still refuse to eliminate unsubscribed channels from surfing channel to channel. I'm sure that everyone enjoys mashing a button 42 times to scroll through unsubscribed channels. And even if I could eliminate each unsubscribed channel it would take me a year to go through an inane multi-button input sequence for each unused channel.

I think that our comcast digital remote is a piece of garbage. I like our service with comcast and have only had a few minor problems with our cable in the last 7 years, but the remote has always been a piece of junk. I am 10 feet away from my cable box, with nothing between my remote and the thing, and I have to pump away on any button that I want to use like I'm playing a video game to make anything happen. Other times it works fine. Can I get one that works please? Yes, the batteries are fresh, I constantly put new batteries in the thing. The functions, when pressed a million times, work just fine and the remote is designed well when it works.

Hello Mr. Poteat and thanks for your comments.

There is additional discussion on the new guide in our SA (Scientific Atlanta) areas happening here: http://blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-guide-for-scientific-atlanta-cable-boxes.html

It's certainly difficult to escape advertising; it is all around us; advertising is a part of TV, radio, magazines, online - even on airplane banners at the beach, on highway billboards, on airline tray tables, on transit vehicles - my monthly/weekly train pass even has an advertisement on it. The Philadelphia Inquirer even has ads -- sometimes even on page 1.

The banner ads that are displayed in the on-screen guide are related to TV content and are designed to aid in discovery of additional content available to you. Some of the ads are even for free On Demand content that you may not be aware of. I can appreciate that you don't like the ads.

A tip I will share is that you are able to skip through the ads in the guide (as in not land on them) by using the Page Up or Page Down key on your remote control while browsing the TV listings grid. The TV listings grid is the only location where the ads are part of the guide.

I hope that helps. I appreciate your feedback and thanks for being a Comcast customer.

The new guide may have a few additional features that are nice but the ad at the bottom is very annoying. The guide is blue and the ads are redi / orange and you must scroll the ads as if they are channels. It really cheapens it. It seems that Comcast has found another way to sell ads at the expense of it customers.

is there any way to change the remote functionality so that you have to enter three digits for the channel to change? It use to be this way and then suddenly changed (likely when I had to have the DVR replaced). Now the channel changes after a few seconds if the remote is bumped or stepped on by the dog in the bed. This is an issue if I have paused a program and are not caught up, as soon as the channel changes I lose everything that was paused. This is very frustrating when there is something I want to watch and happens far to often.

As a technician for Comcast, I can personally tell you that the Power buttons are absolutely horrid. Expecting customers to push TV-Power-Cable-Power to turn things on and off is a little frustrating.
The All On button is slow and kludgy, not a valid replacement.
Older Remotes that came with Scientific-Atlanta boxes in early 2000 had a TV button that turned the TV on. Likewise a Cable button that turned the box on. Simple and to the point.

#1. (this is the thing I dislike the most): The channel buttons should be in the middle, not at the lower end. When holding it with one hand and trying to change channels with my thumb, I always drop it unless I support it with my other hand. Remotes should be one-handed
#2. Volume should be on right and channel on left. One uses the volume button more frequently and this should be on the side that people most usually hold the remote in.
3. Way too busy. Grey buttons on top, Lock and Day buttons (what are they for?) and Picture-in-Picture are never used. Take 'em off.
4. Should have, somewhere, a list of channels in alphabetical order with the corresponding numbers. Cannot remember the 3-digit hi def channels

Could someone PLEASE fix the issue of the "last" button on the remote control taking you back to the first/lowest channel when in the favorites list? It is extremely inconvenient to have to repeatedly forward through your entire favorites list to get back to where you were. It looks like someone else (see Douglas, 7/17) had been told this would be fixed by mid-June, but so far, nothing. Thank you!

Hello Ms. Bonilla – I am sorry to hear that you are having troubles with your Comcast remote control. You can get a new one at your local Comcast office or call 1-800-COMCAST and we can arrange to get you a replacement at no charge.

1) The volume up and down keys no longer work.
2) The exit key must be pushed down extremely hard in order to work (so hard that sometimes it kets stuck!)
3) The white down key doesn't work.

ALl of this makes it very frustrating for me to change the channel, especially on the "guide" page since I can't scroll down or exit the screen.

How can I get a new remote? I can't stand this any longer.

I have two cable DVRs, one of which is the HD version. I have slight problems with the remote talking to the non-HD DVR, but have significant issues with the remote talking to the HD DVR.

example: If I want to change the channel to 63, it will readily register the 6 and then change to channel 6. If I hit the 3 again, without even registering the first 3, it will go straight to channel 633. I have similar issues with significant delays in trying to pause a recording or live program. The problem has become dramatically worse over the last month.

The remote I have for my regular DVR is identical to the one I use for the HD-DVR. I have tried swapping them out, replacing the batteries, etc, none of which seems to help. This makes me wonder if the problem is with the HD DVR box, or with the interface between the remote and the HD-DVR, rather than a simple issue with the remote itself.

Regardless, this problem is a borderline deal-breaker for me, that may cause me to cancel Comcast if there is no imminent fix for it. It is extremely frustrating to take several minutes to try to change to the channel you are trying to watch and, in the process, miss the first part of the show. It is simply unacceptable.

I have the same issue. The remotes are constantly not working. Half the time they read only one digit that is put in and sometimes don't work entirely. Very frustrating when just trying to relax and watch some TV.

Hi Roger, I'm really sorry for your inconvenience. I have asked someone from our digital care team to contact you about the large-button remote control. Regards, Lisa

The comcast remote with the red ok button can not be programed for our tv. Therefore we either buy a new remote or use two remotes. Comcast seems to be unwilling to update their codes for newer tvs

I've got the same problem as others here: A 94-year-old mother who can see or operate the tiny new remove. So far, I've been told:
Take the new box back, get a 'regular box' and her old big-button remote would work with that.
So I did that today, disconnected the box and took it to the Comcast office where I was told that, no, her old remote would not work with a regular box either. But if I called Comcast, I could order a large remote for the visually impaired. They couldn't order it there, but they noted it on her file.
So I drove back to her place, reconnected the digital box and called Comcast, where I was t old that, no, they don't have any larger remotes to send out. But I could buy a universal and see if that works.

Total crap. All of a sudden it has a several second delay which makes everything from changing channels, ffwd, pause etc. a nightmare. Seeing as Comcast is pretty much my only option and their service has always been horrendous, I guess I shouldn't expect any better from their remote?
