New Guide makes watching TV even better

You might not know it, but you interact with Comcast’s Guide pretty often. The Guide is that blue screen that tells you what’s going to be on, what’s available On Demand, and allows you to control your DVR.

I sat down with Ted Hodgins, Senior Director of Video Product Development, to get a look at the new Guide and some of the cool features that you can expect to see soon. If you want even more information about what the new Guide offers up check out our New Guide Web site that lists all the new features (we couldn’t cover them all in our video).

Hello again Ms. John. I wanted to follow up on this issue. The team was able to uncover the source of the incorrect guide data listings and they should be accurate later this week.

Your area of Englewood, FL is considered out-of-market for Fox Sports Florida and the incorrect program listings were being shown in the guide (as you noted), Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Hello Ms. John. I apologize that the guide listings for Fox Sports Florida are inaccurate in your area. Thanks for bringing this problem to my attention.

The local Comcast team in Florida is investigating and will work to correct this issue as soon as possible. I will keep you updated.

I don't understand why the electronic channel guide for Englewood FL consistently offers the wrong information about the programming on channel 72, also known as Fox Sports Florida. It always says we will get the Florida Panthers games - we never do. Tonight it said we got some filler and the Clemson/Virginia Tech womens game is on instead. This was also available on pay per view so your electronic guide told me it was only available there.

My family pays extra for sports programming. It would be nice if the electronic guide was accurate since the Sarasota paper fails to list certain games that we are hoping to watch.

What's the deal?

Hello Mr. Naugle and thanks for stopping by Comcast Voices. .

Unfortunately, the sleep timer functionality is a feature that is not supported in the new guide. Many television sets support this feature independently. The sleep timer and wake timer functionality are returning in a future version of this guide coming to may markets later this year. These are features that most other video providers also do not currently offer.

For your other question, your cable box likely has an AC outlet on the back panel for powering another device. You can plug the power cord from your TV set into that outlet (you probably have already done that).

One thing to check is that the AC power outlet on the back of the box is turned to switched.. Here is how to check that or turn it on. Using the silver Comcast remote control, press the Munu button twice, the select setup, then cable box setup, arrow down to AC outlet

If setting is set to Switched, the AC outlet on your cable box’s rear panel is on when your set-top is on, and off when your set-top is off, so any TV that is therefore receiving its power from this AC outlet will switch off when your set-top is turned off. If setting is set to Unswitched, the AC outlet is always on, so any TV that is receiving its power from this AC outlet will continue to receive power whether your set-top is switched on or off. It sounds like you would prefer this to be set to Switched.

The old guide had a feature to set a sleep timer but on this one i can't find that same feature. Also, the old box could be set so that you plugged your tv into the back of the cable box and you could turn it off with the power button on your remote. Could you help me with this?

Hello Mr. Bowles and thanks for sharing your feedback. I can appreciate that you don’t like seeing the ads in the guide grid.

The banner ads that are displayed at the bottom of each page in the guide grid are all related to TV content and are designed to aid in discovery of additional content available to you; some of it even free. In future versions of the guide, the ads are much less intrusive.
Something that you may have already discovered (and a tip I will share for others) is that you are able to skip through the ads in the guide (as in not land on them) by using the Page Up or Page Down key on your remote control while browsing the TV listings grid.

You are also able to modify the listings grid to show 5 channels at one time (the same number of channels displayed as the previous guide). Press the Menu button on your Comcast silver remote control twice, choose Set Up from the on-screen menu, then Guide Set Up, scroll down to the Grid Cell Height option and change Double Height (the default) to Single Height.

You don’t have to leave the DVR on to record. It will turn on and record if it is turned off.

You do need to leave the DVR on if there is a recording in progress. The previous on-screen guide software did allow you to turn the DVR box off (it actually went into standby) when you were recording a program, the new guide software does not. This is certainly a slight change in behavior and in line with what the majority of our customers are used to and have in their home today.

You can certainly leave the cable box on and the TV off when recording programs. If you leave your cable box off, it will turn on to record according to what you have scheduled.

With the new on-screen guide, when you attempt to turn off the cable box while a DVR recording is in progress, an on-screen message appears that says the following: "A recording is in progress. Turning off your cable box will stop all recordings in progress."

There are two options presented on-screen underneath this message.
1. Continue recording, leave cable box on
2. Stop recording, turn cable box off. You can chose one of those options.

If no selection is chosen the on-screen message will time out and the DVR will continue to record.

There is a slight power variance between the SA/Cisco box and other set top boxes being on and off (most consumer electronic equipment is never really all the way "off" unless it's physically unplugged.). The variance I see between power on mode and sleep mode on a Cisco HD set top is roughly 0.3 W.

http://www.energystar.gov/ia/products/prod_lists/set_top_boxes_prod_list.pdf

Leaving the box on allows for your cable box to easily get software and firmware updates as well as updated TV listings. This should not significantly impact the lifespan of the cable box or the hard drive. There are many more details on the new on-screen guide available at the link below: http://www.comcast.net/meetyourguide

The new guide is terrible. I pay Comcast a lot of dollars a month and DO NOT want to see an ad on my channel guide. I now only get four channel listings per screen. The old guide was much better. There is a lot of truth in the old saying,"if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I am very upset over the changes. I do not like the new interface for "My DVR: but I can learn to live with it, not the guide though, it must change or I will.
Also I, using your remote and with your advice, set it up to power on/off both my and cable box with the one power button. However, since your "upgrades" I am prompted that I am recording a program and recording will stop if I turn my box off??? So now I have to leave my box on all the time? What if my box is off, will it record programs I have scehduled to record? Now I have to power off my sound system which is a PITA because I have to reset more things when I power it back on.
You have made your service worse fr no reason that I can see and added stress to my life when I try to relax at home. What are you thinking? I use an Exporer HDTV box, two of them in fact... but if this keeps up I won't be using them for much longer.

Hi, I was wondering if there are any plans to expand the capabilities of AnyRoom DVR to allow the satellite units to have management functionality. Just watching shows on more than 2 TVs is a step from my Dish system, but ONLY being able to watch, and not control recording, or pause real time TV from the remote units, is a step back. It seems kind of strange that if I'm watching a show I'd like to record on a remote unit, I can do it from my smartphone, but I can't do it by simply hitting the "record" button. Thanks for your thoughts. Ron

Hello Mr. Kramer and thanks for visiting Comcast Voices.

It sounds like you need to adjust your settings via the HD Wizard and User Settings so that the on-screen guide will fit better on your tv screen. Here is a link that should help to resolve that: http://por-img.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/HDTV_Setup_Guide.pdf

If you are still having trouble with that, please give us a call at 1-800-COMCAST.

Unfortunately, PIP functionality is a feature that is not supported in the new guide.
PIP is not currently on our feature roadmap. PIP was only ever available in our SA/Cisco DVRs. The PIP feature impacted a small percentage of our SA customers and an even smaller percentage (4%) of our overall customers; most of which have never had the PIP feature through their cable box. We did not make the decision to not retain the PIP feature lightly. The ability to keep this feature and incorporate it into phase one of the new guide would have significantly delayed this project and subsequent downstream projects even more - like the guide that we really want to get out in front of our customers later this year.

We also conducted extensive research around the importance of the PIP feature in the current guide and as a potential future feature in upcoming guides. In our on-going customer research, PIP continues to drop in ranking of importance of features that the majority of our current customers (and potential customers) use or want. PIP was only ever available with DVRs in our SA areas (a very small percentage).

I certainly understand that there is a passionate customer base for PIP. We also realize that there are some customers who will not be happy about this decision and even some customers who may choose another video service provider that offers the PIP feature.

A new feature that is available with the new guide is the Pause, Swap, Pause functionality, which allows a customer to pause a current program that they are watching (i.e. football game on one channel), swap tuners to another channel and watch the programming on that channel for five minutes, pause that channel and then swap back to the original channel (football game), which is still paused. Not meant to be a replacement for PIP, but a low tech full-screen alternative that may suffice in some cases.

No Volume on channel 76. Check your SAP or LANG button on your TV remote control (not the Comcast remote) and be sure that it is set to “channel default” or English. Also in the guide, please check your language settings. They can be accessed and modified by pressing the Menu button twice on the Comcast silver remote control, then choose Setup, then Audio setup. Here you can change the Default Audio Track. The choices are: Channel default, English, Spanish, French and Portuguese. Not all channels and programmers deliver SAP all the time and not all channels offer all of the presented options.

There are many more details on the new on-screen guide are available here: http://www.comcast.net/meetyourguide/

I have passed along your request for the Al Jazeera channel to the local management team that oversees your area. The channel lineup in each area is defined by many things including customer interest, cost and channels that are legally and contractually required to be offered.

Hello Mr. Perkins and thanks for your question.

We are excited about improving the on-screen guide experience for our customers in northern Virginia.

We are now over 60% complete in the roll out of this new guide to our Scientific Atlanta customers. We have many areas scheduled for next month as well.

We need to first get the initial version of the new on-screen guide to your area of Virginia. That step is scheduled for the end of June. All locations are scheduled to have this first version of the new guide by mid-July.

Impacted customers should be receiving notification and materials in the mail soon with additional details on the new on-screen guide. Plus you should get a phone call the night before to let you know about the new guide.

This new guide is just one step of a multi-step process of improvements, enhancements and new features for our customers in our SA areas. You should expect to see additional improvements this year. The path for future features and quick innovation is through this new guide - features that a majority of our customers have been asking for and features that are already available in the majority of Comcast areas.

The main reason why we are implementing this on-screen guide change is to be able to deliver additional features and services to all of our customers a lot quicker. Some examples of these future features include Caller ID to the TV, myDVR Manager (scheduling your DVR via your phone or from the internet) and AnyRoom DVR.

Our SA/Cisco customers should see some phased improvements and enhancements over the summer and into the fall, including myDVR Manager.

Thanks again for your comments and thanks for being a Comcast customer.

I am not happy with the changes. The on-screen guide is archaic compared to the old version. (1) I can't read all the material on screen because the text is partially cut off on the left hand side. I tried making adjustments through set-up but nothing works. (2) There is no more picture-in-picture which I would like to have back (3) I get no volume output from channel 76 (World News)-- it's mute. (4) I would like to have Al Jazeera network added to the line-up (and don't say it's missing due to lack of interest). All the changes you've made are really frustrating and I've spent a lot of time trying to make sense of it all.
Thank you for responding, Dennis Kramer from Minneapolis

Hi, when will MyDVR Manager be available in Alexandria, VA 22302?

For what it's worth, I'm currently on SA Explorer HD-8300. Coming from Tivo, I find myself barely 40% satisfied with the DVR and programming/guide features.

Hello Mr. Overfield and thanks for your question.

Customers in Minnesota started to get the new on-screen guide last week.

Due to the large size of the Comcast area in the Minneapolis area, we need to deliver the guide on a rolling schedule by cable box type. Box types are currently scheduled weekly throughout this month. Impacted customers should have received notification and materials in the mail recently with additional details on this guide update.

For the MN areas listed below, the Cisco RNG 100, RNG 150 and RNG 200 cable box models received the new guide last week. The SA Explorer 8300 and 3250 box models are scheduled to get the new guide in Minnesota this week. The remaining box types are scheduled for the week of May 23.

MINNESOTA: Bloomington, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Edina, Fridley, Hopkins, Jordan, Madelia, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, Montrose, New Prague, New Ulm, Richfield, Shakopee, St Louis Park.

Schedules are subject to change. There are many more details on the new on-screen guide are available here: http://www.comcast.net/meetyourguide/

The new menu system is not better and your customer service is not service at all. I need a channel listing and the online list is not up to date. I never get anyone in Richmond VA so no one can answer my questions as to which cable boxes are available to me or what HD channels have been added.

Hello. I received the packet in the mail a few weeks ago about my upgraded guide. I have to see any changes. I would like to know when it will go into effect for the Fridley, MN area? This old guide is terrible and I hate not being able to search for shows or sports or to enter a channel number into the guide and just showing me what is on rather than completely changing what I'm watching.

Hello Mr. Reuter and thanks for sharing your comments.

I can see that you are not entirely satisfied with the new on-screen guide. Using the new guide may be a challenge initially for some customers, especially after using the same on-screen guide interface for many years. I can certainly understand and appreciate that. Also there are some feature variances and deltas that may have been core features for some of our customers.

As with all of our new products, we have extensively tested the new guide with an independent research firm with real Comcast customers in Scientific Atlanta areas and also received much direct and positive feedback on usability. There actually has been some positive customer feedback in this very blog. In our independent research sessions, the overwhelming majority of the customers preferred the new guide and the new features over what they previously had. Granted, the new guide is different and does take some getting used to. This new guide is just one step of a multi-step process of improvements, enhancements and new features for our customers in our Scientific Atlanta (SA) areas. You should expect to see additional improvements this year.

The banner ads that are displayed at the bottom of each page in the guide grid are all related to TV content and are designed to aid in discovery of additional content available to you; some of it even free. In future versions of the guide, the ads are much less intrusive.

Ads are everywhere in most all products and businesses (magazines, basic cable channels like USA and TNT, movie theaters, newspapers, even my monthly train pass has an ad on it) and help to subsidize the associated recurring editorial and programming costs.

Something that you may have already discovered (and a tip I will share for others) is that you are able to skip through the ads in the guide (as in not land on them) by using the Page Up or Page Down key on your remote control while browsing the TV listings grid.

You are also able to modify the listings grid to show 5 channels at one time (the same as the previous guide). Press the Menu button on your Comcast silver remote control twice, choose Set Up from the on-screen menu, then Guide Set Up, scroll down to the Grid Cell Height option and change Double Height (the default) to Single Height.

We have some significant enhancements and improvements to the on-screen guide coming in this year that I think you will be quite pleased with.

Hello Mr. Wagner and thanks for visiting Comcast Voices. We have had some unscheduled (and scheduled) delays in the roll out of this new guide. The good news is that your area of MA is scheduled for mid-June.

This on-screen guide is what is needed first before we can start adding in the remote DVR applications, Caller ID to the TV and other new features that are scheduled to be available to our SA markets later this year.

Impacted customers will receive notification and materials in the mail with additional details on this guide update. You should also get an e-mail (if you have a comcast.net e-mail address) plus a phone call right before the change takes place. I am also able to list the upcoming schedules on this page as we get closer to the specific dates.

This new guide is just one step of a multi-step process of improvements, enhancements and new features for our customers in our SA areas.

There are many more details on the new on-screen guide are available here: http://www.comcast.net/meetyourguide/

I'm on the old Aldelphia network (Pembroke,MA). I was told in the spring of 2010 that I would be receiving the new channel guide in late 2010. We're almost mid-way through 2011 and still no guide.

I can't get the same features as my neighboring towns Caller ID on TV. The DVR apps. I see that Comcast continues to add new features, but since I'm on the old network I can't utilize these features. Yet, I pay the same rate as some who has the newer features.

Can I get a date when I will receive the update? I'm pretty frustated with the typical resposnes from Comacast, i.e later this year.

Hello Mr. Kunde. We have just updated the earlier link I posted to include an additional step with the the User Settings; those need to also be set.

Here is that link and the instructions posted below:

http://por-chr.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/High_Definition_TV_Setup_Guide.pdf

TV User Settings
This allows you to set up closed captioning and toggle between your video settings and resolution output.

1. To access user settings, turn OFF your set-top box; it will remain in standby mode.
2. Press GUIDE on your remote while the set-top box is in standby mode. OR press Channel Up + Channel Down simultaneously on the front panel of the set-top box.
3. From here you can set up your video settings and resolution
output.

Video Settings — Configure the settings to your TV type. 4:3 Letterbox, 4:3 PAN/SCAN or 16:9 wide-screen.

Resolution Output — Configure the HDMI/YPbPr output to either 480p std, 480i std, 1080i.

4:3 Override — Off, 480p, 480i, 1080i.

4. Use the arrow keys on your Comcast silver remote to select the appropriate settings.

You may have already tried this. Please let me know your results. Thanks.

Hello Karen and thanks for your comments. I can certainly understand how you would not appreciate the new on-screen guide if it did not record your shows.

Below are some DVR highlights to address your immediate needs.

Record a series program
1. Press the Guide button on your remote to view the TV Listings.
2. Highlight the TV series you want to record and press the Record button on your remote twice and select the multiple red dot symbol. Or press and select the Record icon from the Program Information screen. Select the Set up a series recording icon (the multiple red dot) to specify your recording options.
3. Select the Record series with these settings icon (the wrench) to schedule the recording, or select the View all settings icon to access advanced setup features.

Hello Rick and thanks for stopping by Comcast Voices.

Most low or no audio issues can be corrected by setting the Optimal Stereo output of the set-top box. Here are the one-time steps:

1. Press the Menu button twice on your silver Comcast remote control.
2. Select Setup
3. Select Audio Setup
4. Under the Optimal Stereo setting, choose "Select to Optimize" and press OK/Select on the remote control

If you are still having issues with the guide displaying correctly on your TV, I would recommend checking the link below for a one-time adjustment of the HD user settings, or call us at 1-800-COMCAST and we can help you resolve this.

http://por-img.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/meetyourguide/HDTV_Setup_Guide.pdf

Something that you may have already discovered (and a tip I will share for others) is that you are able to skip through the ads in the guide (as in not land on them) by using the Page Up or Page Down key on your remote control while browsing the TV listings grid.

Hello Mr. Kunde. Thanks for visiting Comcast Voices.

If a SA cable box was set to pass-through before the SA guide change, that should now be set to 1080i with a 480p override. This will display HD sources in 1080i and SD sources in 480p. Of course you can also modify the HD output settings display to set all channels to either 720p or 1080i. We are looking at "pass through" as a possible future feature modification in the guide firmware.

On most cable boxes, to verify or modify this setting, turn off the cable box (leave the TV on) and press channel up and down at the same time on the front panel of the box. That should activate the user settings. The link below should also assist:

I really dislike the new guide and since the service tech that was at my house last week couldn't fix my problem, I think it's time to switch.
My problem is that since the new guide update, I can't record a series on the Syfy or the Travel Channel. I can only record a show one time only.
The tech swapped out my DVR which did not change my problem.

now its not and its so big you can read it. third, more limited view of selection on one screen without having to scroll down. please change it back...it was better before..

Since the upgrade to my SA 8300 the output keeps changing to 480i. Everytime I turn the TV or the DVR off I need to go into settings and change the output back to 1080i. Is there a setting I am missing?

Hello Mr. Senflt and thanks for your feedback.

The guide ads are less intrusive in future versions of the guide. This is the initial version of the guide, the foundation and the path to get additional features and improvements deployed more quickly.

The banner ads that are displayed at the bottom of each page in the guide grid are all related to TV content and are designed to aid in discovery of additional content available to you; some of it even free. In future versions of the guide, the ads are much less intrusive.

Ads are everywhere in most all products and businesses (magazines, movie theaters, newspapers, even my monthly train pass has an ad on it) and help to subsidize the associated recurring editorial and programming costs.

Something that you may have already discovered (and a tip I will share for others) is that you are able to skip through the ads in the guide (as in not land on them) by using the Page Up or Page Down key on your remote control while browsing the TV listings grid.

You are able to modify the listings grid to show 5 channels at one time (instead of 4 channels). Press the Menu button on your Comcast silver remote control twice, choose Set Up from the on-screen menu, then Guide Set Up, scroll down to the Grid Cell Height option and change Double Height (the default) to Single Height.

Thanks again for your comments and thanks for being a Comcast customer.

After all the hype I was looking forward to the new cable guide.

Boy, what a letdown.

The ads displace information and make the whole thing look tacky in the extreme. They're just plain annoying.

Please remove those obnoxious ads.

Hello Mr. Koury, Thanks for visiting Comcast Voices.

You can only access Closed Captioning through the Guide if you have an HD cable box connected with HDMI or component cables. Customers with non-HD cable boxes need to access Closed Captioning settings through your TV and should refer to the manufacturer’s instructions on how to enable this feature.

If you have an HD box: Press the Menu button twice on the silver Comcast remote control to view the Main Menu. Select Setup then Subtitle Setup to turn captions on or off, and adjust other closed caption settings. There is a lot more information about the new guide available here: http://www.comcast.net/meetyourguide/

Thanks again for your feedback and comments and thanks for being a Comcast customer.

Hello Gary and thanks for stopping by Comcast Voices.

Among other projects, Comcast is in the process of rolling out a nationwide initiative called "World of More" that will enable us to bring customers access to more innovative products and services, including many more HD channels. This is rolling out neighborhood by neighborhood. We will be sure to communicate early and often with customers as these additional services come to their area. The "World of More" project - more info at https://digitalnow.comcast.com/ - is understandably just one of the many projects and improvements that our teams are coordinating and scheduling.

From the schedules I have seen the Nashua area is currently scheduled between April and June. That timeframe is subject to change based on many factors. You will receive more specific information in the mail as we get closer to the actual date for your neighborhood.

I would like to find out when we are getting the added HD channels we have been being promised for over a year now in Nashua New Hampshire. For over a year we have been suppose to receive the rest of the Starz & HBO channels in HD (Medford Mass has had them over a year now). Everytime I contact Comcast I am told, "by the time the next quarter ends", well, over 4 quarters have gone by and nothing.....Last year I was told by May 25th...then it got pushed out to the end of August...then by the end of Oct...then by the end of Dec....and at least 5 reps that stated by Jan. 1, 2011 we would have over 1000 channels and over 200 HD, instead, I have lost 7 HD movie channels in the 700's (yet, Medford Mass still has them)...Been promised HDNET (once again, Mass has it), BBCA, ID, etc, etc, etc....So basically what Im looking for is someone to PLEASE give me a straight answer....thank you!

Hello again Lauren. I checked with the local team in Connecticut that oversees your area. Guilford, CT (which is part of our Branford system) does not yet have the AnyRoom DVR service available. There is one last technical piece that needs to be put in place and the current schedule shows that the AnyRoom DVR service should be available by this summer. Apologies for the delay and I appreciate your patience.

Hello Ms. Rothe and thanks for sharing your comments.

One of the key benefits of this new guide is that with a common platform, Comcast will be able to more quickly deliver new products and services to all of our customers. Once we get the initial version of this guide out to all of our SA customers, you will start to see more rapid deployments of improvements and enhancements to the SA platform. That is one of the major reasons for this new guide; to get to a fairly consistent guide platform and user experience across the county. This will allow us to develop, test, trial and implement and deliver products much more quickly on this new platform rather than rely on separate paths for our SA and Motorola areas. Our SA areas are already targeted to see additional service and product improvements this year - features like myDVR Manager (ability to schedule your DVR from a PC or phone), Caller ID to the TV, HSN shop by remote and other interactive TV applications.

This on-screen program guide is phase one of coordinated multi-phase feature enhancements scheduled for our SA markets. We have some significant enhancements and improvements to the on-screen guide already underway and coming to your area this year that I think you will be quite pleased with.

It's hard to escape advertising; it surrounds us - on TV, radio, magazines, online, on airplane banners on the beach, on highway billboards, on airline tray tables, on transit vehicles - my monthly/weekly train pass even has an advertisement on it. The Philadelphia Inquirer even has ads -- sometimes even on page 1. The banner ads that are displayed at the bottom of each page in the guide grid are all related to TV content and are designed to aid in discovery of additional content available to you. A tip I will share is that you are able to skip through the ads in the guide (as in not land on them) by using the Page Up or Page Down key on your remote control while browsing the TV listings grid.

Thanks fagain for your comments and thanks for being a Comcast customer.

Hi Kathy and thanks for your comments and questions.

All of our Scientific Atlanta (SA) customers will be seeing significant improvements this year. Some SA areas have already started to see these improvements.

All of our SA customers are currently scheduled to get the new on-screen guide on a rolling schedule through May 2011. Once we get closer to the date for your area you will get some notification directly from your local Comcast office and I will also post that information here.

Your area of PA is currently scheduled to get the new on-screen guide in March.

This new guide is step one of a multi-step process of improvements, enhancements and new features for our customers in our SA areas.

Thanks for your patience and thanks for being a Comcast customer.

The new channel guide is horrible. Now we can only see 4 lines at a time. And why WHY do we have to have ads at top and bottom? Perhaps you should look at the guide that Time Warner has to see a user-friendly easy to use channel guide.

Hello Mr. Hill and thanks for your comments and questions.

The on-screen guide does show you all of the available channels that are in the channel lineup, not just the ones that you are subscribed to.

You are able to set up a list of Favorite Channels and use that as your on-screen guide. In fact, you can set up multiple favorite lists for different people in your household or you can set up Favorites lists by genre (Movies, Sports, etc).

Here is how to set up a Favorites List: Using the silver Comcast remote control, press the Menu button twice, then select Setup, then Favorite List Setup. Select Set Up Favorite List and follow the on-screen instructions to add channels to your list. You can also name each list. After the Favorites List is created, you can access it and cycle through it by pressing the FAV button on the Comcast remote control (the FAV button is to the left of the channel up/down button).

Comcast is in the process of creating one Master Channel Lineup for all Comcast markets. This means that most networks will have the same channel number, regardless of what part of the country the Comcast subscriber lives in. This project is rolling out market by market in a phased approach.

Phase one of that project is that we are moving new and existing HD channels into the 1000's channel range and introducing 4 digit channel numbers.

Phase two will see the channels being re-aligned into genre-based locations.
Comcast continues to add new and exciting programming content to our digital video channel lineup, including HD channels made available through the “World of More” program.

To ensure customers get the full value of all programming content, Comcast is realigning channels into logical, genre based locations. This channel realignment will help customers find the content they want easier.

Thanks again for your comments and feedback and I hope the above is helpful.

When I peruse the on-screen channel guide on my Moto DCX DVR, it appears that there are over 800 channels available (I live in zip code 95032). Unfortunately I do not subscribe to all the channels so nearly every time I select a potentially interesting show, I get a "Not Authorized" error. I have not memorized my entire channel lineup so I end up only watching a handful of channels that I have memorized. They are not all necessarily grouped together as a block so limiting my surfing to a block of channels does not work. It's all very frustrating.

Ideally, what I would really like is my on-screen channel guide filtered to only those channels that I am authorized to watched.

OK. I know that it is a marketing ploy to show me what I am missing, so I will upgrade my channel package, but that is not going to happen any time soon. In order to make both me, the customer and the marketing folks both happy if not completely satisfied, could you at least flag those channels that I am allowed to watch by an icon or a unique color or something so I don't always fall into the pot holes of unauthorized channels.

Thank you

I asked why did I receive the post card stating it was available, they said there must be a different number on the card to call. I threw the card away, thinking that calling the 1-800 number would be fine, apparently I was wrong. Can you let me know if there is a local # or someone else I can contact to check on anyroom DVR> I live in zip code 60538.

Hello David and Happy New Year!

There is additional conversation and information on our SA areas happening here: http://blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-guide-for-scientific-atlanta-cable-boxes.html

We do have this on-screen guide deployed to customers in CT, NH and PA - about 15% of our Scientific Atlanta/Cisco (SA) footprint. The remainder of the SA sites are scheduled to receive the new guide in early 2011. We have every intention of doing so and then some.

Once we get closer to the upcoming customer launch dates, we will communicate those locations. Impacted customers will also get notified directly.

After the initial guide roll-out, we have even more significant enhancements and improvements targeted for the on-screen guide coming in 2011 for our SA markets that I think you will be quite pleased with.

We are also in the process of rolling out a nationwide initiative called "World of More" that will enable us to bring customers access to more innovative products and services, including many more HD channels. I think it is a shame that you do not post my comments. I'm sure you don't because I've attempted to let these good folks know that Comcast has no intention of providing the new guide nor Xfinity services to those of us in SA markets. This is because you know they would discontinue their services after watching all the Xfinity commercials and realizing they pay just as much for less service.

Shame on you sir.

Hi,
I am in Rockland MA 02370. When will I be able to get the new guide? I have called customer service a number of times. After being told several times that I already have it (which I don't, because my mother in the next town has it, and so I know what it looks like), I finally reached a representative several months ago who explained that since my town was previously serviced by Adelphia, we didn't have the proper infrastructure yet. But he said it was coming in the next couple of months, but it has not arrived. I also cannot get the Comcast with Tivo yet. Any word on an ETA for these? Thank you for your help!

Hello Mr. Huff and thanks for your comments.

The first item that you described is a new feature introduced with this new guide. The feature is called DVR Auto-Correction referenced here: http://www.comcast.net/newguide/#DVR%20Auto-Correction

As you fast forward or rewind a DVR recording, this feature will automatically adjust for that split-second delay between hand-eye coordination and the stopping point. Depending on how fast you are fast forwarding or rewinding, your DVR will add or subtract a tad of time to auto-correct to what it determines is the logical spot to resume playback.

Based on focus groups with current customers, we have received mostly favorable reviews on this feature. In future versions of the guide, this feature will be able to be turned off or on by customers at each cable box. The default for this feature will be “on”.

The second issue is one that is most likely caused by the networks themselves going slightly over the scheduled time on programs on purpose with the desire of maintaining the viewership flow of one program into the next. DVR customers are the unfortunate victims of this industry practice. We continue to work with our network partners (including the cable networks owned by Comcast) to instruct them on the impact this practice has on all DVR customers.

Same question for the AnyRoom - ETA for our area?

For the last few months, I have been having two frustrating problems with my HD/DVR system:
1. When I play back a recorded program and I use the fast forward feature, the recording starts playing at a point prior to where I stopped it. Then I have to fast forward again and guess where to stop it. If I go too far and have to use the fast reverse, the replay starts at a point later than the point at which I stopped that. Before this started, both my wife and I were very adept at using the ff, but not any more.Very frustrating!
2. When I play back a recorded program, I typically get the last of the program before the one I recorded and then miss the last of the program I wanted to see. I have had your techs and your phone reps tell me to just go into the guide and set the recording to start late and stop late...that's ridiculous. I also have had the phone reps to tell me that it is a network problem...that they do not always start on time. Except for sports programming that is not the case. I see most programs start and stop on the hour or half hour. This too is very frustrating
I am sure I am not the only one with this problem...I have seen some other comments on this forum, all unanswered. Why can't these two issues be corrected???

Hi Everyone-

I am reading back through all of the comments and am wondering if there is any updated ETA available for AnyRoom DVR and HD channel additions in Chicago (60631). I have spoken to numerous Comcast reps this year and keep being told that availability has been postponed (july then august then October the november and now an indefinite postponement).

I have a DVR box that is not working properly (has been troubleshooted) and two older boxes that I want replaced (including 1 SD to HD update). I do not, however, want to have to pay a tech to come out twice; once to swapo existing boxes and a second time to bring the AnyRoom boxes when available, especially when these features are currently available through UVerse and Direct TV. I am also wondering why we haven't received any of the other HD channel upgrades (E.g., MSNBC, Comedy Central, etc...) that the suburbs and AT&T/Direct TV subscribers have.

It would certainly be helpful to know what to expect. Thanks!!

Hello Chris M. Thanks for your comments and questions. We do have some information and discussion on the new on-screen program guide for our SA areas happening here: http://blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-guide-for-scientific-atlanta-cable-boxes.html

For background, the Arlington, VA cable system was acquired by Comcast in 2000. The previous cable provider used Scientific Atlanta (SA) infrastructure and equipment. The DC cable system also was also acquired by Comcast from yet another different cable provider; however, the previous cable provider for DC used Motorola infrastructure and equipment. Our Scientific Atlanta areas have a different infrastructure and plant architecture than our Motorola areas. They work differently and use different cable boxes and other equipment. The on-screen guide is usually tied to this existing back-office infrastructure and equipment. Certainly, yes, these are both Comcast systems and we are targeted to bring a new on-screen guide to the remainder of our SA areas in early 2011 so that the on-screen guide experience is fairly consistent regardless of where you live or what type of cable box you have.

We have been working hard and for some time to provide an overhaul of the guide in our SA areas. The new design and feature set will more closely match the guide and the on-screen experience that we have in the majority of our areas. I think you will find our new guide for SA cable boxes to be a vast improvement over what you have now. Thanks for your continued patience and thanks for being a Comcast customer.

Is there any reason Arlington, VA is not in a Motorola area? All my friends in the sounding areas (dc, Alexandria) have them, but Arlington was left out. Can you at least give a time frame?

I was wondering if someone could tell me the advantages of AnyRoom DVR? I have an appt for Saturday, but I'm not sure if it's really worth it. I have two TV's, have the 3400's DVR and I like to record and watch in both rooms (living and bedroom). Is there anything other than recording on one box and watching on either box? In the bedroom, I really only watch movies, and in the living room I watch tv shows. I'll absolutely get it if people think it's worth it, just looking for some reasons that it would be good to have.

Hello Sharon - Thanks for your comments. It sounds like you are in an SA area (Scientific Atlanta). The conversation and discussion on that guide is happening over here.

Thanks!

Robin - your complaint about the notice of the recording (beginning and end of program timer) is valid, but frankly that is one of the few things about this guide that is bad. Everything else is MUCH better and MUCH easier! Searching for shows is easier, setting program timers is easier to verify and edit, you can see all shows just on one channel for the next several days, color coding for sports, movies, kids, etc. You shouldn't slam a whole guide just because of one feature.

I will second your complaint, though, and would ask Comcast to either remove the recording warnings or make it optional to get the recording warnings. I would also add a feature where you can see all your timer recordings set up and to manage them. The SA guide does have this, though it is still extremely user UN-friendly. I HATE the SA guide with a purple passion, but SA was my only option here in Houston for HD. I would have been so much happier with the Motorola. I have to go into my bedroom and use my non-HD Motorola box if I want to search for anything and then come back in to the living room to watch it in HD.

James - must be nice to have all those HD channels. In Houston, we have YET to get Comedy Central or Bravo in HD. It is frankly very annoying and I have no idea what the freakin' problem is here.

Hello Patrick - the Ethernet port on the back of many of our cable boxes is not currently active. This may be a port that we could make active in the future.

The two-way cable plant allows for the addition of iTV applications like HSN Shop By Remote and Caller ID to the TV that are already available to most of our customers. Other Interactive TV applications on the cable box are expected to be more broadly deployed in early 2011.

Hello Lauren - This was totally my fault and I apologize. I gave you some incorrect information. I checked again with the CT team and your area needs one more step before the AnyRoom DVR product can be available. The expected time frame for AnyRoom DVR to be available in your area is in the first half of 2011.

Hello Garry - Right now, all of the Chicago areas have AnyRoom DVR available except for the Chicago West area. I expect that the Chicago West area would have the AnyRoom DVR product available by mid-December at the latest.

Hello Mr. Joyce and thanks for your question. Toms River, NJ is one of the areas where we use Scientific Atlanta cable boxes.

First thing is that we need to get the new on-screen guide deployed in your area. That is targeted to occur in early 2011.

Second, we have a newer on-screen guide that will go to RNG cable boxes (also in early 2011). This second guide and separate cable boxes (the RNG 200N) will be able to support AnyRoom DVR.

Hello Mr. Demers - I did hear back from the Seattle team. The new customer available date for AnyRoom DVR service for your area is now November 18. Nationally 96% of our Motorola areas already have this service available. Apologies that your area is near the end of the deployment schedule.

Will comcast ever fix the way the favorites list is implemented on their boxes? There should be a way to make the favorites list the default channel list for both the guide and while surfing up AND DOWN the channels. As far as this feature is concerned comcast is still about 15 years behind both Directv and Dish Network.
