Update on problems shown in post on 3-13 below on loading Norton Security Suite. Received follow up email confirming that Norton Engineering Support Team was supposed to call me at 3 pm CDT on Monday. Received no call waited till 4pm then called in on 800 number provided in email. Got into Norton menu system. Asked if I had a case Id or Priority number. Entered case Id number 498290853 that was given to me verbally and provided in followup email. System said it was an invalid number and kicked me out 3x times. Called in and waited in regular Que. After nearly 1 hour lady answerd and got case id number. Reviewed case and said it had already been handled by a supervisor and needed to go to a higher level so she referred me to her supervisor. His name was Prateek. I reached Prateek at 5:15 pm after being on phone for 1 hr and 15 minutes and waiting since nearly 3 pm. Prateek was no help but said the he would get the Support Group to call me tomorrow (Tuesday) between 2 and 4 pm with a target of 3 pm CDT. We confirmed phone numbers etc. I asked about my priority number and Prateek said it was 498290853. I told him that was the number I used and it didn't work and the system kicked me out. He assured me that was the good and correct number. He could not issue a new one. I will be waiting on the call Tuesday from 2-4 PM. Good luck with Comcast and Norton. I'll keep you posted. This is a direct measure of what they think of our time and how they value us as customers.
This appears to be Norton 360 3.0 under the covers. Five hours total with Symantec tech support trying to establish why my system would reboot (hard) every 15 to 30 minutes. Did not seem to be related to any specific application or process. I'm running XP SP3.
We/they finally gave up. I am now running with no antivirus support at all since there's no way that I can see to revert to McAfee even until such time as I can purchase my own AV software. I will be trying the trial version of Norton Internet Security 2010 since it's a more recent build and without some unnecessary features that may have been upsetting things here. If it works, I guess I'll have to buy it. I doubt Comcast will be willing to foot the bill for something from Symantec that works for me (sigh).
COMCAST did a totally stupid thing sending out a dialog box on the transition to Norton that remains on the desktop and cannot be closed. I will find a way to NEVER use them again. It was totally stupid......
The change from McAfee to Symantec has been a total nightmare. Never had any problem on any of my computers with McAfee but after installing Symantec lost internet connectivity on one computer, continued hangs and freezes on another, and so on. Literally spent most of yesterday with Comcast Symantec tech support with their remote connections via Logmein trying to fix things and still there are problems. I am in the process today of taking Symantec off all the computers and going back to paid McAfee which was totally trouble free for years. This brings back all the bad memories from the distant past when I tried Symantec/Norton Security software before.
Nightmare loading Norton Security Suite on Presario 2176RS laptop. Had to remove it and presently do not have any protection on laptop. Started on line session at 4:02pm local and ended at 7:48pm local without fix. Referred it to "Enginnering Group" who will call me on 3-15. Hung up twice trying to download finally got it loaded with tech help and it appeard to work but computer would not boot on battery. Worked fine on AC power supply. Checked battery with routine and it said fine. Battery is about year old. Once booted up disconnected AC and computer ran for over 3.5 hours 2 different times without problems of any kind (flickering etc). On battery computer would boot to Win XP screen, then go black and stop. On AC it would boot to Win XP then to Compaq splash then to Win log on and then to desk top. Also noticed exteme slow page load on Comcast on initial load. Initial page took nearly 3.5 minutes to load on wireless 48 mbps. After 1st load it was faster but still slower than McAfee. Not sure about this one. I reported it to Comcast Tech here in Memphis to enter it as potential serious problem. There are more than a few Presario laptops out there.
I had the "error writing to disk" problem, but I used the little cleaner tool on this Norton support page and it fixed the problem:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100120153600EN&C12=Comcast&pvid=nsce_1&entsrc=Comcast
I downloaded the Norton Security and it says I'm loaded but I don't have any proof. I have no Icon.
I had a lot of trouble uninstalling McAfee so that I could install Norton without problems, messages kept popping up and everything. I did some research and found that if you go to the website below and download the McAfee uninstall tool and then restart your comp, it works like a charm and gets rid of all the hidden files that wouldn't delete when I tried to uninstall the program. I'm about install the Norton program now so I hope all goes well. ::fingers crossed::

I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and I'm getting the same error that many noted here upon installation of the Norton product: "Error writing to disk". I could have called the support number but based on the feedback here suggesting that was likely a waste of time, I just downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials. A number of reviews I read suggested that it was as good as Norton and significantly less resource intensive, and at free, it is hard to go wrong. If you are running into this problem, I suggest getting the free Microsoft product as an alternative. You can find it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/
Having said that, I still think Symantec should fix this problem and Comcast should post workarounds for common installation issues. I'd rather read about solutions than spend three hours on the phone.
I had one of the easiest installs ever. Took like 5 minutes. Maybe you guys should remove the old anti viris software first. I will miss the big M but hey, doesn't cost me anything and Nortons is a pretty good name. Sorry you guys are having so much trouble. :(
Updated and installed without a hitch, problem, heart ache or error.
Since I'm not footing the bill, I could care less if McAfee, Norton or otherwise. The difference between any of them is primarily aesthetics. Some do a little better/worse than others, and that position changes with each release.
Good news for those upset with the switch, I have it on good authority Comcast isn't forcing you to run Norton. And by the by, McAfee, Kaspersky, Avast, Zone Alarm, Panda, oh the list goes on, are likely more than willing to trade your dollars for a working version of anti-virus / security suite.
Just do your homework and read up before you buy. Here's a decent link for a review of the latest:

The problem is with old registry entries for the Symantec download manager.
I found a Symantec support post pointing to a tool that cleand download manager entries. Once I ran that tool download worked with no error.
Here is a link to the tool:

I installed Norton Security Suite from Comcast, and it's running great. It's found a few things my last AV missed, and I am overall satisfied.
Norton has really improved it's products around 2009-10. They don't hog CPU any longer and actually speed up your computer's performance.
Just set it, and forget it. It's as simple as that.
I received an email from Comcast regarding this switch from McAfee to Norton. But, before simply clicking 'switch now', I did a little research, including reading the comments on this blog. Since Norton rates no better than McAfee in CNET tests, I wonder why Comcast is forcing this on us. NO WAY IN HELL I'M SWITCHING, with what I' reading about the hassles with the install process. I'll switch to Verizon and install a top rated anti-virus like Kaspersky, and save on Verizon's 6 months deal on their bundle. HEY COMCAST, WAKE UP!!!! Bad corporate decision!!
another very disppointed comcast customer here. 3+hours last night and still no resolution. won't install on my XP machine. goes all theway through the process and then right after it installs drivers, it uninstalls Norton....haha....
what was wrong with McAffee anyway?
You don't seem to mention whether my exisiting applications will still work in my PCs and laptop. Norton has been notorious for causing problems with, run of the mill, applications like Photoshop, Premiere, lots of the Microsoft stuff. This was why I was so happy when Comcast provided Macafee. If providing security entails just turning the computers off and not using them, there is something wrong with this picture. It will mean Good Bye Comcast for a lot of people.

This deployment was totally botched. I spent three hours with chat support with remote access. They could not fix the persistent PC needs scan message. The program would perform the scan with no problems found. It still displayed PC needed to be scanned. I removed the program to do a clean install. Now the security website in unavailable! This is typical substandard customer service by Comcast.
I performed the Comcast switch from McAfee to Norton today on two computers. The first one failed to automatically install and it took 1.5 hours of support from Symantec to force the install. The second computer did the switch without errors, but I manually removed McAfee prior to trying the automated approach. I believe this prevented more headaches.
Now the bad news: Both computers take significantly longer to bootup. Both computers are now painfully slow in loading IE8 pages. And occassionally, Norton Security Suite fails to initiate at system startup.
My home page for IE8 used to be Comcast.net, however, that page is so slow compared to pre-Norton, I am going to have to find a new home page. (Did Comcast try to benchmark loading their own site with NSS versus McAfee?)
I have one remaining computer still on Comcast's McAfee. I have to say, across the same wireless home network, web pages are loading visibly faster! Clearly, NSS is a hog on two of my computers after doing the Comcast switch.
As for the Norton toolbar being installed into my browser, there are no words of thanks for such an intrusion.
Downloaded norton it worked for about five days then came up and said it needed to be activated, No way to activate it so I tried to reinstall it which makes You uninstall it and reboot Your machine, then when I download it from comcast it comes up and says download is complete and does nothing. Thanks COMCAST.
What a disaster. They send an email out telling you to switch to Norton. You follow the links and uninstall mcafee. Well, they don't bother to warn you that it only works on certain operating systems. I have an old laptop and, being in a recession, I can't buy a new one. However, I find this out after uninstalling mcafee. So now i have no security whatsoever. I understand that its virus def file would be out of date eventually, but at least i would have some protection. And, yes, the sys reqs are listed. But the email says you have to switch and you follow the links and believe that they wouldn't be so lackadaisical as to have you risk losing all your security. A simple pre-download warning saying: WARNING this software only works on XX operating systems. DO NOT UNINSTALL your current virus protection if have a different OS.
See, not so difficult.
I wonder how many people have just been screwed by this?
I just went through a marathon support call on this product that lasted about three or four hours, and the supervisor punted. They gave up. They deferred to Symantec. Comcast support is going to be swamped with this problem. I would expect supervisors to take ownership of problems like this, but that is not in the Comcast corporate culture. They try to squirm out of the problem any way that they can.
Also, Symantec has installed a toolbar on my browser without asking. I don't want it on my browser, and uninstalling is no trivial matter.
The support people at comcast have NO CLUE!! This software is crap. I have been on a online session for about two hours and now they want me to reset my modem. The error message provides absolutely no guidance to have the user fix the problem. In fact the comcast support people cannot figure it out either. What is comcast doing buying this crap software on our behalf?
I just noticed the switch too and did a bit of research. Comcast shows
this version of Norton as being powered by 360 technology. Norton just
released Norton 360 ver 4.0. The boxed product for this version
prominently displays the version number above the logo; the box above
does not, suggesting customers are being switched to an less recent
version, perhaps ver. 3.0 released in early 2009.
Second, I'm no expert but in reading the review at PC Magazine, here's
what I learned:
1. Norton is effective at overpowering existing malware that block
Norton's own installation; it sends a "prescanner" in to clean things
up, but...
2. ...testers found one piece of test malware that Norton couldn't
overpower via its installation program. The boxed product contains a
bootable CD with the Norton Recovery Tool that addressed this issue,
but if you downloaded Norton, you don't get it (I don't think). This
might be the source of people's difficulty in installing Norton--they
don't have this tool. You can download it separately, burn it to a CD,
and boot from there. The alternative is that the installation program
steers you to an online chat session, where you may be "coerced" into
buying more software or paying for a service call.
Last, I'm not sure I believe that this is a $160 value; if my
suspicions are correct and this is ver. 3.0, it's already an obsolete
version, and the new version's premier edition is priced at about $100
or less; no way an older version is more expensive.
i downloaded norton and it has been nothing but a nightmare.. i had to call norton and they wanted to charge me to fix my computer . and then they said they would transferr me the the free norton help. my computer freezes and is slow and cannot surf the web or even go to msn and look at my email.. sometimes i cannot even restart my computer without mannually shutting it off... i wish that comcast stuck with mccaffe it gave me no trouble and my computer never froze or just stopped working ..... this is a nightmare... and no one at norton was able to fix this problem but they did make it faster as it was before, but now i have lots of junk coming up on startup.. i called comcast today and they cannot help me with this program that they want all of us as comcast customers to have.. they referred me back to norton....
I am so very disappointed to hear about this switch. Norton is a bloated, time-sucking, bog-down-your-system software and I have never desired to install it on any system I own. I wish you'd stayed with McAfee or found something else instead of Norton. Ugh.
Yep. Same here! Symantec Download Manager "Error writing to disk"
Can't install!
When I try to install Norton Security Suite, symantec download manager gives me an error "Error writing to disk"
Why didn't Comcast notify its customers about this switch to Norton? I was at a neighborhood (75 homes) party last night, and only a couple of us knew about it. Most of the homes are blissfully using McAfee, totally unaware of what's going on. It does seem consistent with Comcast's inability to communicate, eg, they recently withdrew 8 movie channels in our area, but told no-one, not even customer service who was madly sending out techs to solve the "missing channels problem"!!
Since 2009 Symantec has made great anti-virus and firewall products. I am currently using Norton Internet Security 2010 - the 2009 and 2010 products has won many awards from PC magazines and web sites. It installs very quickly and uses a minimal amount of computer resources. I purchased this product rather than using Comcast's McAfee. My daughter used the Comcast version of McAfee and has had several problems with it, including it not picking up so spyware. She has now switched to the Comcast Norton Suite. The Comcast Norton package is similar to Norton 360 which uses the same virus and firewall engine as Norton Internet Security. When my current NIS subscription is up I will be switching to the Comcast version.
Thank you Comcast!!!
This is terrible news. Anything I have ever owned from Norton/Symantec has been nothing but trouble. As far as I'm concerned, you should have stuck with McAfee. I hope I'm still able to keep that and my subscription through Comcast or it will be a reason for me to look at other internet providers.
Hey John,
