Comcast Mobile App Part 2.0 - Xfinity Voice, Video and Email Go Mobile

theguiderdvr.jpgLast year, we launched a free mobile app for the iPhone® and iPod touch® [App Store Link]. The reviews were good (check out Ars Technica and Gizmodo, for example) and we were pleased to see the app reach more than 100,000 downloads in less than a week. But customers asked us, when will I be able to remotely program my DVR from my smart phone?

With Comcast Mobile 2.0, now available on the Apple’s App Store SM, we’re delighted to announce that remote DVR (rDVR) capability has been added, along with some other new features (you should really check them out!). Comcast Mobile applications are part of our vision to extend the accessibility of our video, voice and data products by making them available anywhere and on any device. The app, along with our HighSpeed2go 4G/3G wireless data service, FancastXfinityTV.com and Secure Backup & Share, are three recent examples of how we have made our products and services accessible in ways that were not possible even just a few years ago.

The pace of innovation in our business is accelerating and Comcast remains committed to being on the leading edge of that change. Comcast Mobile 2.0 is part of that story and our customers now have access to one of the most comprehensive and robust “triple play” apps that is available in the industry. With rDVR, our customers will never miss their favorite show or movie, because they can program their DVR at any time, from anywhere (PC or smart phone). Granted, it will take us several months to fully roll-out remote DVR programming across the country, but the process is well underway. We’re working as fast as we can to bring these new features to you.

Comcast Mobile 2.0 really is a “one stop shop” to stay connected to our services and to each other. And we won’t stop here; we have additional enhancements that will continue to be introduced into the app in the coming months.

To learn more about the application, visit www.comcast.net/comcastmobileapp.

Can we get a version of the Xfinity app that will work with Ipod First Gen's? Apple won't release the latest software (4.2 I think) to first gen's in order to get people to give Steve Jobs more cash.

Help?

Thanks!
J

Did you give up on the BlackBerry app? It used to be "coming soon" but now I don't see a reference to it. Last time I tried I couldn't get to the DVR settings from my BlackBerry on the mobile site either. There are plenty of clowns out there saying nobody is using BlackBerry anymore but that's a bunch of BS.

I think we all know that we have remote dvr programming. What everyone is waiting on is mobile dvr for the android. Cannot believe how long this is taking. You said back in September that it was coming soon. Now, every month you all say it is coming soon. Fios has had this technology for a while, but unfortunately, they are not in my area.

i think it's bs that you guys keep saying that the app is coming for blackberry. you've been saying this for almost a year and then a few months ago it was being tested by employees. either you're going to release it for blackberry or you're not...but stop stringing us along. it's a waste of everyone's time to keep looking for a release date and only seeing comcast say "one day" or "we can't release an exact date". you'd think after months of testing and having us wait, you'd have an idea by now...especially since we are paying customers, not just people looking for a fun free app. get your act together comcast!

I love the comcast app but please add android and blackberry support. Please also add all ondemand content not just movie trailers and a feature where you can use your devise as a remote so you can type things quicker and get to channels easier.

P.S. Thank you for allowing us to voice our comments and concerns.

Hi Craig, the Comcast Mobile app will be available on Android devices soon. Cathy Avgiris just wrote about this in a more recent blog post: http://blog.comcast.com/2010/07/xfinity-voice-reinventing-whats-possible-with-your-home-phone.html

In addition to our mobile app, we also offer remote DVR programming online through MyDVR Manager. To access MyDVR Manager online, visit www.comcast.net/mydvr

Android app please. The iPhone is a great device but it is hard to see why Comcast would ignore the growing number of Andoid users. If resources are an issue Comcast should consider putting the development of an Android app ahead of any improvements to the iPhone app. Developing an Android app pleases a large number of customers. Improving the iPhone app may please a few customers but it rubs the rest of us in the wrong way.

Thanks,

The Comcast Mobile app will be available on BlackBerry and Android devices soon, but we don’t have an exact date at this time. Our goal is to provide the app on as many smartphones as possible in the future.

Does Comcast have any update to the blog post your referenced? That blog post is nearly 3 months old and it states "We hope to make the app work on as many different devices as possible, including Blackberry and Android." That sentence does not even really promise that an Android app is forthcoming it just states that they hope to have it for Android. She does not even say that they hope to have it available soon.

I have used the DVR scheduler through the website, but unfortunatley that is not a viable option on my phone due to the use of Flash in the web version. Mobile DVR scheduling is a feature that DirecTV has had available for nearly two years and it works through their mobile web site so it is compatible with virtually all phones out there; even a cheap, pre-paid phone. It is time for Comcast to step up to the plate and make a version available for all platforms. At the very least the three remaining major smart phone OSs (Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile).

Android app needed asap. Just got comcast cable and was very disappointed when i seen that there was only a app developed for Iphone. Then i see that the blackberry app is coming soon. Who uses blackberry anymore unless you merely have it for business. Android is definitely more widely used and accepted platform for mobile computing. Sorry comcast for venting but i expected so much more from a company that has such a wide customer base.

Xfinity has definitley proven to be just a Rebranding of the same old comcast crap ! They talk about it as being a merging of all of your digital services together . Right ! They havent even merged comcast and xfinity . Direct TV has apps for all devices and for all their services ... and they work awesome . Comcast is so stinking slow to adapt to the changing digital market . Where is the Android App , where are all the HD channels we were promised ( dish network has Free HD ) where is the channel guide that doesn't look like it was designed in the 1990's . I switched to Xfinity 10 months ago and have regretted it ever since ! Technology moves at the speed of light ... Xfinity/comcast at the speed of a snail !

Why iphoney? There are far more Windows Mobile devices. This is just one more reason to use my PC for DVR and return your expensive box. Is it so much to ask that you build your features to work with the most popular standards? Or will this be like how your DVR has USB, firewire, and eSATA, yet the storage isn't expandable?

I will gladly leave Comcast for FIOS if Comcast doesn't release an Android version. FIOS already has an Android app for their DVR. Given Comcast's horrible customer service, ridiculous pricing and frequent technical problems, I'm already leaning towards FIOS. If Comcast won't support my mobile device, that may be the last straw. Once FIOS comes to my area, I may ditch Comcast for good.

You guys are *REALLY* missing the boat if you don't release an Android version of this app. Android is quickly gaining ground in the smartphone OS war. Over a million Android devices have been sold by Verizon alone since Christmas...and FiOS has an Android app. I don't think you'd want to be one-up'd by that, would you?

It asks for my zip code to check for availability. i get a giant CONGRATULATIONS it's available in your area message, then when i try to activate... sorry, can't activate. Please read the FAQ or call. So i call and the representative tries to tell me that it's not available in all areas. I realize that services are rolled out to different areas at different times but it would be a HUGE help if there was a web page or some simple way to find out if certain services are available in my area without having to call and get transfered around. I just spoke to some very nice and helpful people who didn't know the status of the rDVR service via the mobile app. I had to point them to this web page.

It would also be great to have a way to be notified when these services become available in my area. An email notification service, an RSS feed, a Twitter account, etc. Any of these are better than having to call someone.

Very much looking forward to trying this out when it's available. Thanks.
