Karen J. Mathis

Karen J. Mathis is president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the nation's largest donor-based volunteer network of mentors for youth. The mentoring organization is proven to help children (ages 6 to 18) of single, low-income, and incarcerated parents beat the odds.

Mathis joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of America in 2009 after serving as executive director of the Prague-based CEELI Institute, which provides post-graduate professional legal training to jurists and other legal professionals in emerging democracies. She was previously president of the American Bar Association (ABA), where she created the Youth at Risk program. Mathis practiced law for 34 years as a partner of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, LLP. She is a director on the Board of Volunteers of America and a past board leader for the Mile High Girl Scout Council. Mathis has also received numerous awards and honorary degrees. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Denver, she received a law degree from the University of Colorado Law School.

Mathis traveled to 35 nations as an ABA Officer and has added two more to that list since arriving at Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is a former Big Sister and a Colorado girl who loves to ski, bike, hike and golf.
